Audience's Teddy Tahu Treat

Following the performance given by Teddy Tahu Rhodes and The Grainger Quartet in the Utzon Room on Sunday 19 October, audience members were treated to a unique, free of charge, ‘in conversation’ piece featuring Teddy and Sydney Opera House Chief Executive, Richard Evans. Teddy and Richard talked about growing up in Christchurch and singing in their school choir together. The opportunity not only allowed guests to engage with an international opera star in an intimate environment, but also gave them with the opportunity to ask a range of questions, providing for a very entertaining evening.

The Famous Spiegeltent - Gorgeous! photoshoot fun

When it came time to do our 'Spiegelshoot', former Machine Gun Fallatio front-woman and Circus Oz Ring Mistress, Christa Hughes, was more than happy to help out. Getting tattooed up and wielding a golden guitar, the result is truly 'Gorgeous!'.

Christa performs in two shows as part of the program - her own caberet show  Christa Hughes: Temptation and with her father, legendary jazz pianist,  Dick Hughes .

The Studio has been named best 300 plus seat venue in the 2008 Best of Sydney Awards

Organised by Alternative Media, the community newspaper group received more than 2400 nominations across 130 categories.

“The cosy red confines of The Studio is the perfect place to see and hear the best in left-of-centre entertainment with world class acoustics and comfortable seats,” the paper wrote.

“Despite its art centre vibe it manages to carve out a role as the black sheep of the big white shells – bringing the strange, the spectacular and the truly talented to its stage.”

Israel Philharmonic Orchestra fundraising dinner a great success!

On Sunday 27 July as part of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra’s visit to Sydney Opera House, Chairman Kim Williams AM and Chief Executive Richard Evans hosted a fundraising dinner at Guillaume at Bennelong.

Approximately 80 guests were joined by Maestro Zubin Mehta and members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, for a meal created especially for the occasion by Executive Chef Guillaume Brahimi and accompanied by Hungerford Hill wines.

Cyrus Meher-Homji from Universal Music presented Maestro Mehta with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the Australian Music Industry. In his acceptance speech, Maestro Mehta spoke of his affection for Sydney Opera House and how much he is looking forward to returning with the Israel Philharmonic in the future. The event, the first fundraising event of its kind at Sydney Opera House, raised much needed funds for Sydney Opera House’s World Orchestras Program, which aims to bring at least one outstanding world orchestra to the House every year.

Pierre Huyghe: A Forest of Lines

A special 24-hour event took place in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House by acclaimed artist Pierre Huyghe. Emptied of its usual functionality and filled instead with around 1000 trees, fog, a lone voice and the light of dawn, visitors were able to step into the Concert Hall and experience Huyghe’s vision and be part of a living art work. You can see pictures of the Forest above.

Sydney Opera House’s Architect, Jørn Utzon's 90th Birthday Celebrations.
9 April, 2008

It has been a remarkable year for Mr Utzon, with many developments inside and outside his building, including being added to the World Heritage List as, “a masterpiece of human creative genius.”

To celebrate this special birthday and in keeping with annual tradition, Sydney Opera House sent Mr Utzon a birthday message. This year, staff formed a ‘House’ Choir and, accompanied by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, sang Happy Birthday from the Concert Hall choir stalls.

The one-off performance was filmed and couriered to Mr Utzon’s home in Denmark.

Jørn Utzon has been the architect of Sydney Opera House since 1957 and is currently working on the Western Foyers project.
